Award-winning app

Morgan Project Services won the Insurtech Start-up of the Year Award at the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance’s 2022 New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards for the development of the MPS Scoping Tool App (also known as FAST App).

An app by Morgan Project Services

MPS Scoping Tool App is a tool that turns any builder or contractor into a fast and effective assessor and estimator.

The iPad app walks the assessor through the assessment step by step. All app functions are controlled by finger taps, with no manual typing.

Once the assessment is finished, app instantly generates a standardised report  and detailed scope of works, and sends them to the insurer, complete with damage descriptions and up-to-date estimates of all materials, labour and services required to complete the repair.

The claim is ready for competitive tender or cash settlement at the first site visit.

Walkthrough

The assessor starts by using the MPS Scoping Tool App to select building details such as age, number of bedrooms, roofing, cladding, and flooring for assessment.

Next, the assessor goes through room by room, adding details of each area as well as information about any damage. The app contains pre-defined items that combine to describe any damage type. The assessor, usually an experienced builder, will then select the most appropriate repair strategies from the extensive database.

The app is adaptable to all loss types and value of work, from small repairs to full rebuilds.

The report

Once the assessment is done, the app produces a plain-English report with correct spelling and grammar as well as accurate cost estimates.

The rates are pulled from a database (maintained by Morgan Project Services) of up-to-date costs of all materials, labour and services required to complete the reinstatement.

It could take a loss adjuster weeks to write out what the MPS Scoping Tool App produces in moments on site. Our assessor is finishing up their scope of works before others have even started their calculations.

From site, the assessor can show this report to the customer, all in the first visit. This gives the customer peace of mind that everything has been included, explains the repair strategy, and gives them an estimate of costs or value of settlement, right then and there.

The reports contain all the details required for tendering, including a full scope of works and specific instructions to builders.

Reports can also be customised to automatically integrate with an insurance company’s internal systems.

Benefits

The MPS Scoping Tool App benefits the insurer through faster claim resolution, more accurate reserve estimates, better cost management of the building companies providing the work, and more accurate costs to offer a cash settlement to the insured.

In turn, customers directly benefit from having a scope of works they can understand, giving them confidence that the works proposed will resolve their claim, or that the cash settlement being offered is accurate for them to manage the work themselves.

Faster resolution means any design or building approvals can get in ahead of the queue after a major event, and repairs or rebuilds can start earlier. The MPS Scoping Tool App helps get customers back in their homes months, or even years, before anyone else.

✗ Here’s how a typical building insurance claim goes without the MPS Scoping Tool App:

1. Insured makes a claim.
2. Assessor or supplier assesses the claim.
3. Assessor sends report to insurer and awaits approval to proceed
4. Supplier or builder prepares and submits estimate.
5. Estimate validated by insurer.
6. Insured and insurer agree on scope of works and cost.
7. Cash settle, or reinstatement by supplier or builder.

The MPS Scoping Tool App claim process:

1. Insured makes a claim.
2. Assessor assesses claim with the MPS Scoping Tool App.
3. Assessor presents scope of works and accurate estimate to insurance company and insured.
4. Cash settle, or tender scope for market value.

Case Study: Rapid expansion in the 2023 New Zealand storm season

After the disastrous floods in early 2023, Morgan Project Services saved insurers millions of dollars, and consistently got insureds back in their homes weeks or months faster thanks to MPS Scoping Tool App.

On Friday 27 January, a storm ripped through Auckland and the upper North Island leaving catastrophic flooding and mass property damage in its wake. Less than three weeks later, Cyclone Gabrielle hit the country causing massive flooding across the Auckland, Northland, Waikato, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatū-Whanganui regions.

Morgan Project Services received over 15,000 claims to assess from these two weather events, more than a 2000% increase on our usual workload.

As a technology-focussed business, we used the MPS Scoping Tool App and developed new digital tools to rapidly scale up and deploy hundreds of assessors. At the peak, we were triaging over 1,000 claims per day. Each assessor visited multiple properties per day, and had the reports and scopes finished in one visit.

Consistent and clear

The MPS Scoping Tool App creates consistent reports, no matter the user's background and experience.

Reports prepared from the app are uniform and easy for all audiences to understand.

These reports are for everyone to read and understand, including the customer, the claims teams, and the contractor.

Time

The MPS Scoping Tool App drastically reduces the claim lifecycle.

The app enables assessors to create a detailed scope of works from site, without the need for further input from the office.

Because the reports and scopes are easy to read, all parties can quickly understand the damage and scope. Prompt decisions, fast resolution.

In 2019 before we started using the MPS Scoping Tool App, Morgan Project Services’ average time to settle a repair claim was 48.87 days. In 2022, it was 26.16 days.*

Money

In that time, our clients saw a 43% reduction in assessment fees per claim.*

Ease of use and comprehensive reporting means less time, which means less claim management fees.

Variance

Without the MPS Scoping Tool App, scopes and estimates can be 30% to 50% off the actual cost to reinstate.

MPS Scoping Tool App scopes, generated at the first site visit, are on average within 5% of the final cost of reinstatement.*

⚙︎ Features

Automated assessment reports

Assessors are usually builders, not English teachers. They are exceptionally good at their job, but not all have outstanding spelling and grammar skills. Thanks to the MPS Scoping Tool App, that’s not a problem.

Our reports are professional and consistent in style and quality, whether they’re written by a veteran MPS assessor, or a temporary contractor on the job days after an insurance event.

The MPS Scoping Tool App generates assessment reports instantly, which can be sent directly from site. Reports include:

  • Analysis of damage
  • Cause of loss reporting
  • Scope of works
  • Methodology
  • List of materials and labour required
  • Accurate, up-to-date costing

The reports and scopes are easy for anyone to read, so the insured can understand and comprehend the works that have been scoped. Scopes give contractors enough information to easily quote the works.

Completed in one site visit

Additional site visits cost time in resolving the claim, and cost insurers money. Having everything completed in one site visit reduces claim costs significantly and speeds up time to cash settlement or reinstatement.

By reducing the number of site visits, assessors can get to more sites and reduce the impact on the claimant, who often has to take time off work to attend site meetings.

Easy UI – anyone can be an assessor

No typing required! No user guide necessary! The MPS Scoping Tool App is self-explanatory and simple to operate, even for assessors who are not tech savvy.

The app contains pre-written damage descriptions – a series of set text options based on any combination or location of damage seen – and generates paragraphs in the output report at the click of a button.

Fully costed reports, instantly

The MPS Scoping Tool App uses real-world costs from a live, up-to-date database of construction product rates in the Australian market.

Without the MPS Scoping Tool App, the actual cost of delivering a repair can be up to 50% different from the initial estimate.

The MPS Scoping Tool App’s initial estimate, completed at the first site meeting, within 10% of the final cost of the reinstatement. On average, the app’s estimate is within 5% of the final cost.

Scalable for large insurance events

In a large insurance event such as earthquake or flooding, the MPS Scoping Tool App can equip multitudes of temporary contractors to handle increased claim volumes.

Reduced training time means these assessors can get in the field immediately.

With the MPS Scoping Tool App, temporary contractors who have never assessed a claim before can create standardised, complete and accurate reports.

Click a button to write a sentence

The MPS Scoping Tool App creates full sentences in reports, from single clicks. There is no need for the assessor to type out paragraphs.

Scopes ready for tender

The MPS Scoping Tool App’s reports can be tendered. They contain all the details required, including a full scope of works, reinstatement methodology, and specific instructions to builders.

All the contractor has to do is apply their own costs to each line item.

‘Apples with apples’

With the MPS Scoping Tool App, assessment reports are consistent from builder to builder, regardless of their skill, literacy, or personal style.

The app’s reports and scopes are all built the same and can be compared like for like. It is easier for contractors to quote when all assessments are standardised.

Contractors quoting on the scope don’t need to produce their own report, they just apply their own costs to each line item.

Fair tendering makes for lower cost to repair, and predictable results.

Plain English reports

The app’s reinstatement and rebuild scopes are easy to read, for anyone. Your customers don’t need to engage third party builders to produce and interpret scopes of works – it’s all right here.

Transparent and fair

When every insured is getting a different experience from their neighbour, it’s hard for them to trust their insurance company. The MPS Scoping Tool App is a great leveller – it gives confidence that the works proposed will resolve a claim, or that the cash settlement offer is accurate, no matter who the assessor is.

Area and event rates

Material and labour prices the app uses to calculate cost of reinstatement are specific to a postcode or a particular insurance event. If prices spike or fall, our scopes stay accurate.

Customised outputs

The MPS Scoping Tool App is tailored to produce specific reports for:

  • Insurance companies’ internal systems
  • Templated loss adjuster reports
  • Third party and Australian Government requirements
  • New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission (EQC)

Easy sharing

System users can easily share and edit scopes. Scopes are version controlled, and backed up automatically to Morgan Project Services’ secure cloud servers.

Health & safety built in

The MPS Scoping Tool App includes health and safety risk assessment, which feeds back to the Morgan Project Services system and is documented on external referrals to suppliers. This aids compliance with health and safety regulations.

The MPS Scoping Tool App is developed by Morgan Project Services (MPS), and used exclusively by our assessors and contractors. MPS is a standalone project management company working in the insurance industry.

We employ experienced builders in project management and assessment roles, where their industry expertise is invaluable. This gives us a unique position to manage building companies on all claims and to advise insurers with accurate claim cost estimates early in the project.
